They say that a simple chair is the most difficult item you can attempt as a designer. Cosmos was my first real chair and I did it on commission from the town where I grew up and everything felt fearfully grand and nervous. And stimulating. I swore to myself that Cosmos was to be given a radical and fresh expression, and I imagined a piece of furniture so elegant that it resembled a graphic symbol more than anything. The stand was to be as slim as a pencil line, the moulded wooden seat as light as a brush stroke, and the back transparent. And the whole was to be both stackable and linkable, coming in two sizes, one broader for lecture theatres and a narrower one for tighter spaces. Discreet but rich in character. And then I went off on holiday. Very cheered.
